Educational and Professional Background

Robert E. Kass is a member of the Detroit, Michigan law firm of Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker, PLLC, where he serves as Chairman of the Tax, Estate Planning and Probate Group and member of the Management Committee, Technology Committee, Trustee of the firm's retirement plans, and person responsible for their administration.

He received his B.A. (with honors) from Wayne State University, his J.D. (with honors), from the University of Michigan Law School, and received a Fulbright-Swiss University Fellowship to study at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.

After earning his law degree at the University of Michigan, Bob began his legal career as an associate with a U.S. law firm in Brussels, Belgium, serving a multinational corporate clientele. He later returned to the United States to pursue advanced studies in tax law at New York University, where he earned a Master's Degree in Taxation. He then joined Barris, Sott, Denn & Driker, in 1979, where he became a partner in 1983.

His practice is concentrated in the areas of estate planning, wealth preservation, and planned giving, for estates of all sizes, from modest estates to estates in excess of $250 million. He and members of his group also handle probate and trust administration, estate tax return preparation, estate tax audits, and post-mortem estate planning.

He is also very active in the charitable community, serving as a member of the Professional Advisory Committees of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, the Michigan Opera Theater, Goodwill Industries Foundation, and Gleaners Community Food Bank.
